Spring has arrived, and for students in the Clovis Unified School District, that means it’s time to get back to the garden.
Some of the crops that the children planted are ones that can be harvested in the spring, while still others will need to be planted. This is combined with what the students are learning in their classrooms, such as botany, horticulture and nutrition. They also learn how human activity impacts the environment.
The children are recording the details of what they observe in Journals, which gives them experience in making and recording scientific observations. According to the teachers who are helping the children to pick what they have grown, it is giving the kids a feeling of success and pride in seeing the end results of their hard work.
This coming fall, some of the schools will be adding a composting section to the gardening facet of their curriculum. A Print company can work with the staff in educational institutions to develop materials that can be used to help deliver this element of the children’s education.
Much of the funding for this program has come from donations and grants from businesses and organizations in the local area, and spokespeople for the schools pointed out that parent and community volunteers are welcome to lend a hand.
