A Clovis Unified teacher combined his job with his love of Star Wars to bring history to life as fans celebrate ‘Force Day’.
Clovis North’s Cliff Nitschke seeks to make his history and AP government classes as interesting as possible by always choosing a theme. This year, returning students found his classroom transformed into a “galaxy far, far away” with numerous Lightsabers, a life-size Chewbacca, and several of the franchise’s Posters decorating the walls. To further extend this year’s theme, Nitschke even went as far as to encourage students to come to class in character.
The inspiration for this year’s theme, besides Nitschke’s affinity for the sci-fi franchise, was ‘Force Day’ on September 4. The iconic phrase “may the force be with you”, has led to May 4 being considered Star Wars Day, but recently another date on the calendar, the release date for the toys and gadget associated with the latest Star Wars installment, has becomeanticipated.
Mixing politics and history with storylines from the George Lucus’ popular films proves to be a simple task for the teacher. Art and politics have frequently intersected over the years, with an example being art work provided to a poster printing service influencing a political movement or campaign.
According to Nitschke, students enjoyed making comparisons between the politics displayed in the film and past and present real life politics.
