Called the Helensburgh Waterfront Development, these plans will see the area get a new, bigger swimming pool with six lanes, a health suite and bigger gym, a play area for children and improved spectator areas. These will all form part of the leisure centre project.
The plans would also see the town’s flood defences beefed up, with work initially having started on the idea seven years ago, before the masterplan was put together during 2012.
Argyll and Bute Council is now hoping to take the project forward, at a cost of £17m, having carried out both private and public consultations. The leisure centre and swimming pool would be scheduled for completion in 2020, with significant amounts of construction required, including demolishing the pool currently located there.
Speaking to the Helensburgh Advertiser, Cllr Morton said he was delighted things were progressing, adding:
“It has been a long-time coming, the current swimming pool and pier car park are an eyesore but this multi-million pound project will improve the overall appearance of Helensburgh.”
Should it end up being constructed, the leisure centre will be able to rely on brochure printers to provide it with materials that show off its various amenities.
