One of them is Gordon Reid, who is the top wheelchair tennis player in the world, while the other is Melanie Andrews, who runs a company in Helensburgh. Both were named as MBEs in the honours list and will travel down to London to receive their medals.
Reid enjoyed a remarkable 2016, claiming victory in no less than four Grand Slam tournaments, as well as two Rio Paralympics medals.
Andrews has been recognised for the work she has done for her local community, in addition to her efforts in promoting baking via the Scottish Baking Awards. Speaking to the Helensburgh Advertiser, both of the recipients stated that they were thrilled to be honoured. 25-year-old Reid said:
“It’s a great honour for me. It’s been a fantastic year for me – the best year of my career – so to finish it off like this is like the icing on the cake.”
Andrews added that she had been required to keep the news secret from her family, which had been a tough task.
When people receive official notifications of this kind, lamination can be a useful way of preserving them as mementos.
