At Loch Lomond and Balloch the Great Scottish Swim saw around two and a half thousand swimmers take part in the swim. Distances covered were from the beginners half mile, the elite one mile, right up to the 10k – all in the open water of the Loch.
Swimmers included those who have competed at Olympics, World and also European Championships, with major medal winners amongst the competitors, as well as locals and not so local swimmers out for some fun in one of the most iconic Lochs in Scotland. Many more people turned up to spectate and when those who help with logistics, health & safety as well as lifeguards are added into the mix, then many thousands of people have come into the area and enjoyed its fine vistas.
People are warned also to be careful swimming in the Loch as it is very busy at other times with various crafts sailing and speeding around, though these are curtailed during the Event itself.
Events like this are wonderful opportunities for Balloch to sell itself to people from around the world and tourism hubs should take advantage of local printers to produce leaflets detailing what they can offer those who are just briefly in the area for competitions.
