This cafe will enable local people to get damaged household items repaired while they enjoy some refreshment. Among the kinds of items that can be brought to the cafe are tools, clothes, bikes, furniture and electronic equipment. The repair cafe is being organised by Watford and Three Rivers Friends of the Earth. That group has now started to look for people who have the necessary skills to make it work.
Anyone who commits to doing repair work in the cafe will be doing so on a voluntary basis. The idea behind these cafes is to encourage the reuse of items, to cut back on waste. They are also ways for people to learn new skills in a friendly, community environment.
The cafe in Watford is expected to be open once a month. Anna Addison from Friends of the Earth told the Watford Observer that:
“Lots of repair cafes have been popping up all over the place, we’ve been talking about it for about three years, but we didn’t have the resources to do it.”
Poster printing by Watford shops is one of the ways in which new local community facilities can be advertised.
The cafe is due to be launched during October.
