Man undertakes longest commute in UK for print company job

When placing an order for digital Business Cards in Watford customers may find them being printed by a man who takes his job so seriously that he is willing to travel the equivalent of four times around the Earth each year just to get to his job.

Gary Egan, 46, is the head of production for a larger format Print company and travels from Porthcawl in Wales to his Watford office - a round trip of 372 miles. Mr Egan rises from bed at 3:30 am to get to work on time, racking up travel costs of £15,000 per year in the process.

Mr Egan stresses that the commute is worth it as he enjoys his work, and that he doesn’t have the same job opportunities in Wales. However, he admitted that it would be nice to have a job closer to home.

There are some drawbacks, however. The father-of-two is not able to spend as much quality time with his family, and is not able to benefit from an exercise regime. He said:

"My partner has a very important and also stressful job. We have discussed the options for a move, but we feel that our quality of life is much better here than it would be closer to my workplace in Watford.

"I like to run and on a weekend - and within five minutes of my leaving my front door, I am running alongside the beach and the sea."
