Walthamstow teenager launches overseas initiative

A teenager from Walthamstow is involved in the establishment of an international scheme.

Fiona MacDonald, a student from Walthamstow, is working on a plan that might help people in Zambia. Edinburgh Global Partnerships has been cooperating with a small group of students at the University of Edinburgh. McDonald hopes that this scheme results in the increased employment of Zambian women in the future.

Initially, the eight students want to raise some funds. Their first target has been set at £9,000. Fundraisers are often promoted with the help of Posters and flyer printing. It is hoped that something can be created which will last for five years.

MacDonald told the East London & West Essex Guardian:

“I joined the group after hearing about it around Campus, but I wasn’t completely sure of what it was about yet.”

She explained that her Walthamstow upbringing had influenced her perspective on the world. In particular, MacDonald referred to the multicultural aspect of the area.

A trip to Zambia will be necessary as part of the initiative after a Zambian women’s organisation agreed to participate in the venture. Health tips and business skills should be acquired by local women. Community-led empowerment of this type can lead to sustainable poverty reduction. The idea is that the project will develop its own momentum so it keeps going after the five years are up.
