Studying for her master’s degree in graphic design, Walthamstow student Anne Robinson has created a typography project and is inviting members of the local community to become a part of it through a wealth of unique activities.
The MA student is fascinated by the lettering around Walthamstow used over the years, from its historic adverts in corner shops to today’s modern signage and graffiti art, which create a unique social backdrop for the East London area. She explained to the Waltham Forest Echo that:
“Each piece of lettering in Walthamstow tells us a story of the person who wrote or designed it and the community around them, whether we realise it or not.”
Until the current national lockdown lifts, Robinson is engaging with residents around the area via her dedicated website, established specifically for the project.
Those with an interest in typography can download a selection of activity sheets drawn up by Robinson and can make their own contribution to her design project. The activities can be carried out individually or, once the lockdown is lifted, in small groups that are COVID-19 compliant.
Following the end of lockdown, Robinson has planned several workshops for community members to participate in, along with type and letter drawing walks in the E17 area and a dedicated “Type Treasure Hunt”.
