Walthamstow music venue gets green light

A development involving a music venue and apartments in Walthamstow has been approved by local councillors.

Previously home to the iconic The Standard venue, the renovation project will see the building not only become a location for live music again, but also transform into a residential property, supporting hundreds of small flats.

For 25 years, the popular venue on Blackhorse Lane was a site for live performances from popular bands like Kula Shaker, and UK comedians including Jack Dee and Harry Enfield. Music venues can sometimes promote their latest events using Flyers, created by professional Print shops.

A co-living development, the building project will provide small-scale studio flats for singles, along with communal spaces similar to accommodation created for student living. The Collective, the project’s developer, commented that it had created several such buildings, although the Walthamstow address would set a new standard as far as design is concerned.

Speaking in favour of the development’s unusual combination of apartments alongside a live music venue, council chairperson for the planning committee, Jenny Gray, commented:

“You can’t have an iconic music venue without anything to pay for it, it’s obviously not sustainable on its own or someone would have re-opened it.”

Construction will start at the Blackhorse Lane location next year, and the building is expected to open its doors in 2023.
