East Londoner receives good neighbour trophy

A special award has been bestowed on a neighbourly Walthamstow resident

Alice Taylor-Rugman has received high praise for her community caring amidst the COVID-19 crisis and has been nominated ‘London Neighbour of the Year’. Her efforts involved establishing a WhatsApp group that enabled shielding locals to receive support, and arranging meetings to discuss important issues occurring on Cassiobury Road, where she is a resident. She also organised shopping for those unable to manage and worked alongside the local council to solve problems for others in the area.

The contest, involving searching for the best neighbours around the UK, was created by Neighbourhood Watch and Co-op Insurance. Companies running competitions can sometimes use brochure printing services to create colourful leaflets to attract interest. The two organisations involved selected Taylor-Rugman after she was nominated by neighbour Rachel Craven, who commented:

“Alice has been the main driver of generating community spirit in our street. She looks out for older neighbours, picks litter, and raised funds for a beautiful mural.”

Craven added that although she had lived in London for 15 years, Taylor-Rugman had been instrumental in her getting to know her neighbours.

To mark her new title of Neighbour of the Year, the Walthamstow local has been given a trophy in the shape of a silvery door knocker mounted on a wooden plaque.
