What's Happening in Tunbridge Wells, England…

Tunbridge Wells residents get complaint letters turned into print

More than 300 letters of complaint sent to the Tunbridge Wells Advertiser over a period of years have been collected in print.

The paper is no longer running, so now those letters have been sent to a print company and published in a book, which is available from Amazon with the title of ‘Outraged of Tunbridge Wells: Original Complaints from Middle England’.

One of the many chosen examples to feature in the book is a favourite of the author, Nigel Cawthorne, and is a complaint written by someone in the First World War about being awoken each morning by a noisy cockerel.

The author looked through the newspaper, with the help of local libraries and archives, and took complaints dating from the 1900s to 1954, which is when the paper ceased to be in print. Gripes include excessive Christmas carol singing, pavements that need repairing and telephones that don’t work.

Author and journalist Cawthorne has written 150 books so far, which have earned him a place on the Joan Rivers show and even seen him brought before a U.S. Senate. This time around, his aims are to bring smiles to many people’s faces, some of whom have perhaps complained themselves about similar things.

The book may spark off something and could see print companies in Tunbridge Wells inundated with people who have written down their complaints and who want them turning into a booklet.
