Tunbridge Wells receives Heritage Lottery Fund boost

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has given cultural policy for the middle of Tunbridge Wells over £4 million.

The idea behind the plan is to have one site for the library, art gallery, museum and adult education. The development work will be enabled by an injection of about £180,000. There could be a positive economic outcome from the initiative and print shops in Tunbridge Wells may do extra business. The regional head for HLF, Stuart McLeod, told Kent News:

“We liked Tunbridge Wells Borough Council’s idea of creating a new centre for culture and learning in the heart of this historic town. Transforming two buildings into a flexible community space is a practical and imaginative way to get more people interested and involved with their local heritage.”

The scheme got momentum because of partnership working. The county council and the borough council collaborated to develop the vision.

The next step is for the organisations to work together in a practical way. David Jukes, the head of the borough council, has mentioned that professionals and architects will have to be selected soon. He has said how the completed project should promote Tunbridge Wells as a tourist destination. He has commented on how Tunbridge Ware should be an international draw when it is displayed properly.

Once external specialists are appointed then more detail will be provided. Construction could start by January 2018.
