What's Happening in Tunbridge Wells, England…

Regeneration could transform Tunbridge Wells

A gateway into Tunbridge Wells could benefit from fresh thinking and new developments.

Tunbridge Wells Common faces Church Road and this route serves as a gateway to Tunbridge Wells. However, some shop closures has meant that a change in planning strategy is on the cards. More housing and new amenities may improve the aesthetics of the district. Demand for brochure printing can increase when new developments are planned.

An online wine business called The Secret Cellar is still trading on Church Road. In addition, costume making store Abermarle is situated nearby. These firms might be joined by some housing that would fill the gap left by Oscar’s pub. Planning consent is required for progress to be enabled.

Councillor Tracy Moore, who serves on Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, told Kent Live:

“As the way we shop changes, the forces of polarisation are taking hold. Retailers need fewer physical stores and will be more selective where they chose to have a physical presence. Some retail will be converted to leisure or residential use.”

Councillor Moore is confident that Tunbridge Wells can up its game. She sees the place as having strong retail and cultural sectors. For her, it has the resilience to remain an authentic destination town.

Back in July, expert Bill Grimsey argued that towns need to operate as community hubs. His view is that cultural and digital facilities can help to regenerate urban spaces.
