What's Happening in Tunbridge Wells, England…

New crossing for Tunbridge Wells

A busy road in Tunbridge Wells will now benefit from a brand-new zebra crossing.

Kent County councillors have championed the installation of a new zebra crossing on the London Road (A26) in Tunbridge Wells. The busy thoroughfare has caused considerable concern to members of the public, who have experienced lengthy waiting times trying to make a crossing and have even taken extensive detours to avoid it entirely. The newly addition will now provide an easier walking route and a more direct approach from the centre of Tunbridge Wells to Mount Ephraim.

The decision to add the crossing follows resident requests and the issue being investigated by local councillors David Scott of Tunbridge Wells and James McInroy for Kent. The councillors chanced upon a local couple at the site, who commented that the road was too risky to cross with a pram.

The local council looked into the issue and obtained funding from government grants available from the highways budget before receiving approval to install the zebra crossing. Councils and enterprises making detailed reports for funding sometimes use graphic design services to present their submissions in a professional format.

Originally instated in the UK during the 1940s, zebra-style pedestrian crossings add black and white stripes to road surfaces already marked by Belisha beacons. Today, they can be seen in many places around the world, including India and Australia.
