Museum in Tunbridge Wells displays finest 18th century collection
Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery is displaying what has been described as some of the 'finest' paintings of their kind.
The 10 portraits, all of which depict members of the same family, will be displayed for the foreseeable future. Some of the most renowned painters of the 1700s are responsible for the portraits, including examples by Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds. The latter was one of the founders of the Royal Academy of Arts.
It is something of a coup for the museum, which was selected thanks to its location close to the original home of the Marquess of Camden. Curators and trust members will be hoping the poster printing campaign for the exhibition will have art enthusiasts flocking to the intimate space.
The museum will display the 5th Marquess Camden Will Trust collection in a single room. It is hoped this approach will allow the painters’ different styles to be more closely analysed.
It will also allow the relationship of the family to be better portrayed to the viewing public. Something which is not often achievable in larger spaces, it will showcase one of the local area's most prominent 18th and 19th century families.
Portraits in the collection include a number of notable people, including Charles Pratt, who was the First Earl of Camden and one of the pioneers behind the bohemian area of London.
