South Birmingham in the spotlight as Microsoft games company considers its office space

South Birmingham has been thrown into the media spotlight recently as a subsidiary of technology giant Microsoft looks to expand its current operation that is based south of the city centre in Digbeth. The subsidiary, known as Rare Games is the development house behind the latest gaming craze, Kinect for Microsoft Xbox. The phenomenal success of Rare Games means that they are looking to expand their current staff base from around 90 employees right up to 400 staff members. This news has brought other businesses in the Digbeth area to the attention of local and national press, from other media companies who currently share the Fazeley Studios building, to more customer-facing firms such as local Print companies. South Birmingham has been home to a number of cultural industries since its regeneration began, and businesses born of these industries include art galleries, design houses and companies offering digital printing.

South Birmingham businesses that have spent their formative years in the area, like Rare Games, have helped with this regeneration of the region.

However, the area only has a finite amount of office space and Rare Games are looking for bigger premises that are located closer to Birmingham city centre. This would be a major upheaval for the company as everything from a new building to little things like new Stationery will need to be sourced.
