Midlands theatre-goers were in for a treat recently as a local dance troupe put on a performance with a difference, telling classic stories through the medium of hip hop dance.
Zoonation, a dance company, recently partnered with a local performing arts school in Wolverhampton to put on a show entitled ‘Some Like It Hip Hop’, which takes its influence from classic film Some Like It Hot and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. The show is two and a half hours long and features dances that span genres and that weave a story about girls making their mark in a world dominated by men.
The show was recently held at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre and was well-received by critics in the local press. Students from Coppice Performing Arts School were recently featured in a local newspaper, The Express and Star, with a large-format poster that had been printed to advertise Some Like It Hip Hop using full colour printing.
South Birmingham and the wider Midlands region is home to a number of dance schools and theatre groups that often host shows in local theatres. The appetite for this kind of show has remained strong over recent years and, with the advent of TV shows like Glee, performing arts are now back in the spotlight. Local theatre and dance listings are generally posted in the local press.
The Zoonation dance company is taking Some Like It Hip Hop on tour throughout the UK and full details about tickets can be found on the company’s website.
