A brand new campaign has been launched in Redditch to mark the start of another year that is tongue-in-cheek but that also has a serious purpose underlying it.
The campaign is being called #MiserableRedditch and is aimed at dispelling an undeserved label the town has been given. Last year the Office for National Statistics released data that it claimed showed the town to be the UK’s second gloomiest place, which residents of Redditch both disputed and adopted as an ironic badge of honour.
Now, however, Redditch Borough Council has decided to follow up the spectacular ceremony to switch on the Christmas lights last month with this campaign to prove the label is nonsense. The town’s lights were switched on by special guest Peter Andre who dismissed the ‘miserable’ moniker on social media after enjoying a fun experience in the town.
In officially launching the campaign, Matt Dormer from the council stated that the town is full of people who know how to have fun and work together to improve their particular communities.
Redditch is also full of thriving businesses, including ones that can promote campaigns of this sort, through social media and colourful banner printing.
The council is encouraging people and companies to post stories and pictures on social media to showcase a different image of Redditch alongside the hashtag for the campaign.
