Redditch mural celebrates the areas history

The forgotten history of Redditch is being celebrated in a new mural, called ‘Hidden History’, which has been painted onto one of the town’s underpasses.

The artwork is located at Union Street and features local company High Duty Alloys – focusing on this firm’s role in the development of both the skin and structure of the famous Concorde jet plane.

It also highlights the parts this firm built for the Thrust SSC car that shattered world records for speed. The mural is the work of Andy Mills – an artist hailing from the town – and has been designed to complement well known features of the area like Forge Mill and Royal Enfield Motorcycles.

Alongside the scenes from the town’s past, famous former residents of Redditch are also depicted, such as Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.

Redditch Borough Council’s Yvonne Smith, who is in charge of community safety and regulatory services, told the Redditch Standard that:
“I am delighted to see another one completed as not only do they show how great our town is, they really do brighten up the day.”

The council will be able to call on the assistance of places supplying full colour printing in Redditch if they want to create Postcards of the mural for people to buy.

The 45 by 3 metre artwork Forms part of the Roadway Arts Scheme run by the council, which is intended to increase local pride.
