Potters Bar samples island life

The Mauritius Open Air Festival is due to take place in Barnet, near Potters Bar in mid-August.

This is a celebration of the arts, music, and cuisine of Mauritius and is the largest cultural event of its kind in Europe. It is a family-orientated occasion that brings a flavour of the Indian Ocean to Hertfordshire.

The festival was first held in 2009, and in 2019, its 10th year, attracted some 15,000 visitors, making it an important showcase for the island's commercial interests, in particular businesses involved in the food and drinks sector.

A genuine Mauritian atmosphere is achieved with tropical music, Sega dancing, native arts, craft workshops as well as children's face painting. There will also be licenced bars and an array of vendors selling a wide variety of indigenous foods.

It is an opportunity to try specialities like dhal pouri (A type of Indian flatbread filled with ground-up yellow split peas, and served with chutney in a bean curry), or gajaks (snacks that are deep-fried including samosas and potato fritters), accompanied by the award-winning Phoenix beer.

Tickets range in price between £5.57 and £122.54 and there is a no refund policy in operation. Those attending the event for commercial reasons may wish to consider bringing some extra Business Cards for networking purposes.

The Mauritius Open Air Festival will take place between 12:00 noon and 8:00 pm on Sunday, July 11 at Trent Park, Barnet, near Potters Bar.
