An artist who was famed for his creation of one of the most iconic album covers in modern music passed away recently, sparking a celebration of his work.
Storm Thorgerson, the designer and artist who created the seminal cover for Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album, passed away on 18th April 2013 after losing a battle with cancer. Rather than mourn his loss, the music and design industries have pulled together to celebrate some of the most memorable works that Thorgerson produced in his career, which spanned four decades of music.
Whilst he produced album artwork for the likes of Peter Gabriel, Muse and Led Zeppelin, Thorgerson was always best-known for his work on Dark Side of the Moon, which featured a ray of light passing through a prism to create a rainbow; a design went on to be replicated on countless Forms of memorabilia, from T-Shirts to prints created using poster printing.
Potters Bar was the birth place of Thorgerson, who went on to study for his Master of Arts degree at the Royal College of Arts. Thorgerson exhibited and sold some of his work in Cambridge and London at the start of the year, and posthumous exhibitions are no doubt being planned to celebrate the work of this iconic artist, particularly as there has been a real appetite for the resurgence of pop culture artefacts, thanks in part to the recent David Bowie exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
