Local teen wins place in national orchestra

A teenager hailing from Potters Bar has claimed a spot in the prestigious National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and told local newspapers it’s a dream come true.

Louise Ayerst, aged 13, had to overcome hundreds of Britain’s most talented teenage musicians to secure this spot. The orchestra is made up of 162 musicians and is considered to be the finest of its kind within this age range.

The teen is a student at Dame Alice Owen’s School, located on Dugdale Hill Lane, and has had five years’ experience on the violin. World-renowned violinist Hilary Sturt has tutored her during this time, via the Royal College of Music.

Speaking to Barnet Today, Louise said that this had been her ambition for years but she had not expected to win a place after the first audition, adding:

“It is such a fantastic opportunity to play and work with other brilliant young musicians, and to tackle a challenging repertoire that I wouldn’t normally have the chance to play.”

A National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain spokesperson stated that the latest group of teenagers accepted into the orchestra had been identified as having the most potential, which it would aim to help them fulfil.

Laminating for Potters Bar’s Louise could be something to consider if she wants to preserve her acceptance letter in good condition.
