Hertfordshire community centre seeks new building

Users of a centre for disabled people in Colindale have asked the council to find a new site for its services before 2019, when it will be pulled down.

The Flightways Physical Disability Day Care Centre – which is home to the Barnet Independent Living Service (BILS) and a number of other service providers – is set to be demolished in six years’ time as part of regeneration Plans for the Grahame Park Estate.

The deteriorating condition of the site and the funding difficulties experienced by BILS have led to the council in Barnet trying to decide on a new building for the centre’s occupants.

The local authority, together with disabled care specialist Your Choice Barnet, has been urged to provide all of the services from one building. However, the council is yet to rule out the possibility of splitting the services across several hubs.

According to Potters Bar Press, one user of the Flightways services, Yuki Wong, said she enjoys coming to the centre to meet her friends. She added that while the space is good, the building is old, and said she would like the services to be moved to somewhere similar.

When community centres move location or undergo refurbishment work, they often use the services of brochure printers, in Potters Bar and other areas of Hertfordshire.

Damien Brown, the service co-ordinator for BILS, spoke to Potters Bar Press and admitted that much of the equipment at the site is outdated.

One spokeswoman from Your Choice Barnet said the organisation is doing everything in its power to find a suitable new location.
