As the debate continues over how to increase the number of women and girls taking part in physical exercise, those living in Potters Bar are set to be handed a golden opportunity – courtesy of the National Lottery.
The Hertsmere Project, which was put together by the Borough Council in collaboration with Hertsmere Leisure, has been awarded significant financial backing by the Sport England Community Sport Activation Fund.
The project is a female-only fitness and sports programme, and its aims - to encourage healthy living and an interest in sports - are ones that are being championed at a national level. The performance of female athletes such as Jessica Ennis at the London Olympics raised hopes that greater numbers of young women would become involved in sport, and it is likely that this is one reason why the Lottery has chosen to support the scheme.
Hertsmere has been awarded £162,750 of Lottery money, and is one of 36 schemes to have received a portion of the £5.9 million set aside for funding grassroots sporting activities. Brenda Batten, the local Councillor responsible for leisure, health and culture, said:
“This is a fabulous opportunity for young women and girls to get into sport and fitness. Whether you’re at school and enjoy a particular sport or you’re older and want to get back into regular exercise, this is the programme for you.”
Information about the ‘Women and Girls’ project will be made available online, and the council can also rely on Print companies in Potters Bar to provide the poster and flyer printing needed to advertise it.
