Elstree pupils progress in national challenge

Pupils of Aldenham School recently addressed issues regarding the country’s economic recovery as part of a nationwide competition.

The Elstree students took part in the Target Two Point Zero event – a challenge set by the Bank of England together with The Times newspaper – during which 302 teams from across the UK compete by debating about the Government’s economic policy.

During the regional heats, teams consisting of four students were asked to analyse both UK and global economic stats and assess the potential impact the data would have on the country’s economic outlook – a task carried out each month by the monetary policy committee at the Bank of England.

The contestants then had to decide if the bank’s present policy is appropriate, or if it needs changing to meet the Government’s inflation target of 2%. The teams must then present and justify their decisions before a panel of judges.

Aldenham School’s team, captained by Owen Collier, won the regional stage of the event last week at the DeVere Hotel.

The pupils had to debate in favour of a 0.5% interest rate – which was set earlier this month by the monetary policy committee – and made recommendations for £375bn in asset purchases.

For any school, the successes of both sports and debating teams can be showcased to parents with Brochures produced through professional full colour printing, in Potters Bar, Elstree and other areas of Hertfordshire.

The winners of each regional heat will now go on to the area finals stage, which is set to be held early next year, with the grand final scheduled for March 28.
