It was given to the leader of Northampton’s council, David Mackintosh, by the festival president for the Inland Waterways Association, David Blagrove MBE.
The handover took place at a local whitewater facility as part of a launch ceremony, and the award will stay in the possession of the town until the next place to host one of the IWA festivals is given it.
Northampton Festival of Water is happening late next summer, and the council will be able to make use of services like postcard printing in Northampton, to ensure that both residents and visitors can buy permanent souvenirs.
Most of the events throughout the weekend of its run will be based at the Becket’s Park waterfront area, with the purpose of the festival being to honour the Northampton Arm during its 200th anniversary year.
Cllr Mackintosh stated:
“It is a real honour to receive the Tiller Pin on behalf of Northampton and start the build up to what is set to be a fantastic event with something for all ages, and well worth a visit to Northampton.”
The festival will be held between 29th and 31st August 2015, and entry will be free.
