The placings are determined by a number of factors, including the crime levels, overall life expectancy and health of those living in each region, but it is believed that the low rate of unemployment in south Northamptonshire, which lies just south of Northampton itself, was a particularly key contributor.
The area has a remarkably high rate of employment, at 88.9%, and is home to many thriving local businesses – from restaurants to technology and printing companies – which all contribute to the highest employment levels in the country (the national average being 71%).
Rupert Fordham, the Councillor who holds the current portfolio for economic regeneration and development, welcomed the result, saying:
“This is just terrific news and a great boost for SNC’s Job Clubs, Job matching service and Enterprise Club, which work hard to achieve these kinds of results.
“However we will continue to do all we can to ensure that job vacancies are filled as quickly as possible, and the skills required by companies in the district are matched to those of the unemployed and those looking to change career.”
The Halifax survey took in more than 400 local authorities around the country, with the district enjoying the biggest improvement on previous years – rising 27 places.
