The guitar-orientated Mancunian band The Chameleons are on tour and will be giving a performance in Northampton at the beginning of July.
This outfit was formed in Middleton in 1981 by Mark Burgess and Reg Smithies with Dave Fielding. They subsequently managed to attract the support of the influential Radio DJ John Peel.
The band's initial single 'In Shreds' came out on the CBS label which proved to be a short-lived relationship. They later signed to Statik, who produced both their first album 'Script Of The Bridge' and the 1985 follow-up 'What Does Anything Mean, Basically?'
Deeply disappointed, the group then left to join the Geffen, whose label released a third album 'Strange Times' in 1986. But their manager's death led directly to a break-up in 1987, although live recordings did continue to appear.
The Chameleons decided to reform in 2000 and went on to release three further LPs, only to break up once more in 2003. Burgess and Smithies subsequently got together for a second time in 2020 in order to commemorate the 35 years since their 1985 album.
