Volume three of the ‘Have Guitars…Will Travel’ series by Derrick Thompson takes a look at the years from 1980 to 1987, during which over 100 beat groups sprang up in the area.
It follows on from his two previous volumes, the first of which dealt with the decade from 1957 to 1966, while the second covered the era from 1967 to 1979.
The book has just been published and also shines a spotlight on groups from other parts of the country that came to Northampton to play in its theatres, dancehalls, clubs and pubs during these years. These included the likes of U2 in 1981, The Smiths in 1985, and New Order in 1987.
This proved to be a golden era for music in the town, with local bands producing original material, and Thompson told the Northants Herald and Post:
“The Derngate Theatre opened in 1983 and again Northampton had a modern theatre capable of attracting hundreds of people to listen to live music. And beneath it, the Derngate Lower Function suite became a regular haunt of local bands.”
