The Scottish band Big Country are currently on their 40th anniversary tour, supported by Spear of Destiny, and are due to play Northampton at the end of May.
Guitarists Bruce Watson and the late Stuart Adamson, natives of Dunfermline, formed the new wave group in 1981. It was their intention to create a guitar-based melody and harmony combo with stand-out lyrics.
The band broke internationally with popular hit songs such as ‘Chance' and the anthemic ‘In A Big Country’. Their initial LP 'The Crossing’, released in 1983, was three times Grammy nominated.
This success rolled on all through the 1980s and into the 1990s, with albums such as 'Peace In Our Time’ and the UK No.1 hit single 'Look Away'. They notably appeared at Live Aid in 1985, and even opened for the Rolling Stones.
Under Stuart Adamson's direction, Big Country had 17 UK hits in the top 30 as well as five platinum and gold albums, with record sales of more than five million by the mid-1990s.
Today, the band consists of Bruce Watson (vocals/guitars), Jamie Watson (vocals/guitars) and Mark Brzezicki (vocals/drums), plus Simon Hough (vocals/guitars) and Scott Whitley on bass.
