A new multi-use development has been proposed for the Northamptonshire region. The development, called Rushden Lakes, would be home to a number of shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. Planning officers have said that the new development would bring a sense of regeneration to the area, as well as creating new facilities and jobs for local people.
New shopping developments like the proposed Rushden Lake shopping centre are considered to be good for the economy, as they create jobs and they also encourage out-of-town visitors to spend their money in the local area. Local service providers, such as Print companies in Northampton, are often considered to provide services for new centres. For example, they could be called upon to provide POS printing.
Northampton and surrounding towns such as Wellingborough have had the opportunity to feed back on the Plans for the new shopping and leisure development. While the plans met with some opposition, many people have reacted positively to the proposals. The head of Wellingborough Council, Paul Bell, spoke about the plans, saying:
“Councillors didn't believe the development would be in competition with Wellingborough town centre. The choice of retailers would be different and in fact it could be a catalyst for Wellingborough's regeneration and a stepping stone to attracting big name retailers to the town.”
