Gary Burlinson is now the man in charge of the Malt Shovel Tavern, which is located on Bridge Street, having paid approximately £600,000 to purchase the freehold. The pub specialises in real ales and he told the Northampton Chronicle that this would still be the case – and that nothing else would be changing either.
The manager of the pub, Kirsty Bowen, will remain in her job and other staff members are also being kept on. Burlinson stated that, as a customer of 17 years, he has a real appreciation for the place, adding:
“The customers love it and Mike is only passing it on as he’s retiring after 20 years. I should actually put up a banner for customers saying, ‘Don’t worry, nothing is changing.”
The Malt Shovel Tavern has built at its current site 102 years ago, having replaced the pub that was there before. During this long stint, it has been known by several different names, including Barney Rubbles and the Tudor House.
