Leeds illustrator to host comic book class
A comic book artist from Yorkshire is putting together plans for what is expected to be one of the most impressive events centred on graphic novels ever to hit Leeds.
Lisa Wood, a 39-year-old who hails from Ilkley, overcame dyslexia to become a professional illustrator, and this experience drove her to launch the non-profit Thought Bubble festival. It is intended to introduce people to comic books and show how they can assist school children battling against learning or reading problems.
The festival was first held in 2007 and it has grown in popularity since, with this year’s event in Leeds expected to draw 20,000 comic book lovers and interested newcomers. It will certainly be able to rely on flyer and poster printing from Leeds printing companies to help spread the word.
Wood told the Yorkshire Evening Post:
She discovered a passion for comic books during childhood, when her father gave her 20p to spend on them a second-hand stall at Batley Market, which she made weekly trips to.
This subsequently led her to attend Bradford University, studying Art and Design. Using her pen name of Tula Lotay, she now draws the Image Comics title Supreme Blue Rose and Bodies for Vertigo Comics.

“I designed Thought Bubble to appeal to long-term comic fans, those who have never picked up a graphic novel before and children, so there really is something for everyone at the festival.”
