Brassed Off was released back in 1996 and has since become a cult classic. It tells the tale of a mining town called Grimley that is faced with the shutdown of its colliery. The miners seek to preserve community spirit through their brass band. 2026 marks 30 years since its release and this stage adaptation is intended as a way to celebrate that anniversary.
The work of adapting it to the live stage has been done by Paul Allen and the director will be Amy Leach. It is set to feature live music that will be provided by brass bands from the local area.
Given the enduring popularity of the film, this seems sure to be a big hit. Theatres in the city sometimes use poster printing by Leeds shops though, to help promote any upcoming shows they have.
Speaking to West End Best Friend, Leach said that she felt delighted to be involved in bringing such an important film to a new audience.
She then added:
“This story of resilience, community and the unifying power of music feels just as urgent and moving today as it did in 1996.”
It will play in the Quarry Theatre between 18 June and 11 July.
