What's Happening in Leeds, England…

Blast from the silver screen past in Leeds

People in Leeds with a passion for classic cinema are to be given a chance to wallow in nostalgia, starting at the end of the month.

In honour of the 50th anniversary of the Merrion Centre, one of its retail units in the Arena Mall will be temporarily turned into a free-to-visit cinema showing a range of old films.

The first film to be screened there will be Mary Poppins, the Oscar-winning 1964 musical.

Older residents of the city will know that there used to be a cinema – an Odeon seating 1,000 people – in the Merrion Centre. Since closing in 1977, the unit which housed it has remained empty, but the temporary replacement will revive memories of this era for movie fans living in the area.

It will be a far smaller affair, with approximately 40 places available, and with print companies in Leeds able to reproduce classic film posters using attractive full colour printing, demand for seats is likely to be high.

The week of the actual anniversary will see a film screened at the cinema seven days a week, from noon each day, and the programme for that week includes such popular classics as The Sound of Music, Gone with the Wind, and My Fair Lady. However, it is set to remain open for a further five weeks after this, with the final screening planned for 5th July.
