Epsom could get permanent Jubilee beacon

A beacon could be set for installation at a site in Epsom as a permanent addition to the town, to provide it with a way of celebrating royal occasions such as the upcoming Platinum Jubilee.

A partnership of local businesses called GoEpsom has put in a bid to set up a beacon at Epsom Downs that can be lit to mark occasions like the Jubilee this summer. The notion of a ceremony featuring the lighting of a beacon at this spot was agreed in principle by a committee of Epsom and Walton Downs Conservators this month.

This meeting also saw discussions over what form the beacon should take, with a permanent one rather than a temporary bonfire one receiving the most votes.

Banner printing supplied by shops in Epsom can also help people to celebrate significant occasions like the Queen’s Jubilee by allowing them to hang Banners with messages on them from homes and other buildings.

According to Surrey Live, Councillor Jan Mason said at the meeting that anything temporary would be underwhelming, adding:

“We need a permanent one. We are Epsom; we’re not some Mickey Mouse town somewhere. What we have in Epsom should be saying: ‘You’ve arrived at the Downs. And this is how serious it is.’”

The next stage is to put in a planning application. The Jubilee celebrations take place in June.
