Epsom care home offers hydration and nutrition support

An Epsom care home is providing its elderly residents with vital advice on staying healthy during the summer, through a booklet containing recipes and guidance.

This booklet has been put together by the catering team for Care UK and has been distributed to staff at the Appleby House care home in Epsom. It explains how dehydration is a condition that the elderly are more prone to suffering from because they lose the triggers informing them that they need to drink more liquids. It offers guidance on how to prepare drinks for people in that situation.

This includes ones that have become particularly popular with residents of the care home and that are also packed with nutrients. Most of these are cold drinks ideal for the summer, like fruit purees, strawberry iced tea and mocktails – along with foods like tomatoes and watermelons that contain water.

Print shops based locally can help with the creation of information Booklets like this for care homes.

The idea for it came from the hotel services manager for Care UK, James Clear, and he told In Your Area:

“Every single person working in our homes has a role to play in ensuring that residents living there are properly hydrated.”

He added that this made it crucial that they had the necessary information to be able to do that.
