Transformation plan for Southampton pier gets support

A £400 million proposal to regenerate the Royal Pier in Southampton has reportedly attracted considerable public backing.

The initiative has been led by the development organisation, The Royal Pier Waterfront (RPW) who will be likely to make use of Print shops in Southampton (Hedge End) for promotional reasons if the scheme goes ahead. Charles Forsyth, a spokesperson for RPW, has told the Daily Echo:
“We’ve had a really positive reaction from the public so far. It’s been a long consultation process already as we held meetings last year but everyone seems quite excited by the prospect of having something like this here.”

The Plans have stipulated that there should be a mix of waterfront amenities for the benefit of the public. The idea has been put forward that apartments, offices, retail outlets, and eating places should all be constructed on the site in question; some have put forward the argument that the site would benefit from a hotel and a casino.

Another idea which has been set out is that a cultural centre should play a big role in the new arrangements. Practical considerations have been considered and it has been envisaged that a large number of parking spaces will be provided. Some of these spaces could occupy reclaimed land taken from the adjacent river. In addition, it has been announced that Mayflower Park would also be improved under the strategy.
