Southampton dairy business exports to China

Pensworth, a dairy firm located within Southampton, has sent a batch of its UHT milk off to the Chinese market.

Although Pensworth has begun to export UHT milk to China, European milk producers in Poland, France and Germany have been quicker than their British counterparts when seizing opportunities in that part of the world.

Arthur Dunne, the managing director of Pensworth, will fly out to discuss matters with distributors with knowledge of Chinese demand. Dunne could choose to source promotional items from print shops in Southampton to help market milk products.

Dunne has ambitious plans for Pensworth, having taken over the organisation back in 2011. He aspires to boost the size of the firm dramatically within a period of five years, stressing that growth and employment are priorities.

The Pensworth operation started out in 1975, and was a family business with a Friesian herd. During 1988, the decision was made to separate the enterprise from the Milk Marketing Board (MMB). The processing of the milk was then carried out on an independent basis.

In 2001, Pensworth expanded by taking over Vines Dairies, another local business. Further expansion has seen the opening of distribution points in Norfolk, South Wales, Sussex, Kent, and Essex. Since then, Brazier Dairies has been bought by Pensworth and a stake has been obtained in Leicestershire’s Kirby and West.
