This month, SSU has opted to provide honorary doctorates to Southampton FC legends Francis Benali and Lawrie McMenemy. McMenemy used to be manager of the club, while Benali was a long-serving defender for the Saints. Both will have the honorary title of Doctor of Sport going forward.
The institution used to hold graduation events in November but has switched the ceremonies to July based on consultations with students. Next year, brochure printers from Southampton may be contacted to use photographs from the graduation ceremonies in promotional material.
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Baldwin said:
“This year’s graduation is the pinnacle of a great year for Solent, one in which we have won national awards, lifted sports trophies and seen the completion of our stunning new teaching and learning building.”
He made a point of thanking staff and students for their contribution to the success of the university. In addition, Professor Baldwin suggested that SSU has superb facilities.
The Guildhall was selected as the venue for the graduation ceremonies, which had to be staggered because over 2,200 students had to receive their degrees in 2016. The degrees were awarded to mark achievements in a wide range of disciplines. The work of students in subjects as varied as business management, fashion, film production, architectural technology, and yacht design was acknowledged.
