Cycle campaign launches in Hampshire

A busy road in Hampshire is set to become safer for cyclists as a new campaign launches to raise awareness of the dangers of the road, with both motorists and cyclists being targeted.

This month, Southampton Road in Titchfield Common has been targeted by the new campaign to raise awareness of cyclists and important safety measures. The campaign is called Steer Clear and is being championed and supported by a number of local and national authorities and organisations, including Southampton Council, Hampshire County Council and the national governing body for cycling - British Cycling.

The campaign involves a number of activities and initiatives that are specially designed to make motorists more aware of cyclists and to make cyclists more aware of the safety measures and precautions that they can take to protect themselves. Local police services will be giving out high-visibility backpack covers for cyclists to wear to make themselves more visible to drivers and may also have used flyer printing for the distribution of leaflets to users of Southampton Road.

Southampton Road should become a safer place to cycle because of this campaign. Sergeant Darren Ord is coordinating the campaign and he recently spoke about it to the local press, saying:

“Our message to cyclists is very simple – be safe and be seen. Our leaflet highlights key safety tips, and gives you some discount vouchers to help get yourself kitted out properly – think high visibility, check your lights and remember the Highway Code, it is really important.”

The Steer Clear campaign could be rolled out to other busy roads in the region if it is successful in making this area safer.
