Carl Jones, 32, followed New Mills AFC, who played in the North West Counties league last season. This was the club’s first campaign in that division, having been relegated the year before, and the experience inspired him to chronicle the team’s bid to recover.
The result was a book called ‘Winless: My Year With Football’s Ultimate Underdogs’, which sees Jones put his comic talents to use in taking a fun look at football at this level, as well as how New Mills coped with relegation.
The season saw the team lose 39 of its matches, which is among the worst records in the history of the game, and at the crowdfunding launch, he told the Derbyshire Times that he had to convince them of his intentions:
“I made it really clear that my aims were to tell the real story behind the headlines of a club at the heart of the local community. Teams at this level are simply unsustainable without the tireless dedication of volunteers and loyal fans.”
