Brampton woman hopes her racket will rocket her to glory

One Brampton resident is hoping for glory with her racket, after she was chosen by her country to be its representative at this month’s Rackleton World Team Championships.

Jo Shelley, 46, is a member of the Princes Sports Club, located at Old Road in Chesterfield, but will be making the journey to Poland to play for the England B Team at the tournament – which involves competitors taking on the challenges of tennis, badminton, table tennis and squash.

The matches in the tournament see one game of each of these played, up to the 21-point mark, and these are then added together to produce the overall match result.

Jo was chosen to play for her country after finishing third at the British Championship ladies’ event back in April, and family and friends will be able to take advantage of banner printing in Chesterfield if they want to travel and show their support.

Enthusiasm for Rackleton has been steadily increasing in Britain since its 2006 inception, and Shelley told the Derbyshire Times that she was thrilled at the opportunity:

“It has always been a dream of mine to play for England at a sport, but because I have always liked lots of different sports and enjoyed the variety I didn’t expect that dream would ever be realised.”

In addition to her sporting interests, she juggles full-time family and work commitments.
