Public consultation on outdoor eateries taking place in Camden

Camden Council is embarking on a public consultation process to elicit the thoughts of people living in the area about creating outdoor areas for food and drinks in two local streets.

These al fresco eateries would be on Whitfield Street and Conway Street, both of which are in Fitzrovia, near Camden. The council is calling its plans ‘streateries’ and states that they will help to ensure that the safety of these streets both for people on bicycles and on foot. It is also suggesting that this will be helpful to children who use them to get to school and back each day.

According to Fitzrovia News, the documents that Camden Council have issued as part of the consultation go on to state that the idea would also cut carbon emissions and support small businesses.

They then add that:

“Streateries change parking bays to spaces in the road for businesses to place tables and chairs for al fresco dining, protected by barriers. This means pedestrians; wheelchair and buggy users can pass safely on the pavement.”

Banner printing by shops in Camden may be used to promote any streateries that open in the area, should the public vote in favour of the proposals after the consultation.

The public consultations for both the Whitfield Street and Conway Street proposals are scheduled to run until 4th December.
