What's Happening in London - Camden, England…

Camden street goes car-free

A vibrant street in Camden is to be pedestrianised.

Camden’s Queen’s Crescent is not going to be open to cars any longer, with work to change the area beginning at the end of May. Camden Council is behind the move, which could make local shops more accessible. Poster printing can be useful in a range of sectors, especially when a change requires an explanation.

The public consultation that preceded the pedestrianisation found that residents differed on the best way forward, but a slight majority (49.7% to 43.5%) backed the car-free solution. The consultation also showed that most locals were currently unimpressed with the quality of the local shopping experience, so it is hoped that this work in the area will change that.

Noting that there is a sizeable proportion who oppose the strategy, Camden Council made an alteration to the envisaged scheme so that HGV access to West Hampstead Motors is maintained. When it comes to the pedestrianisation of Queen’s Crescent, businesses that want to engage in loading should receive an exemption from the initiative. There should be other opportunities for parking just outside the area.

If the plan works as intended, there should be additional space for cyclists and pedestrians. The Council also wants there to be better air quality in the neighbourhood, and hopes that businesses will thrive as a result of the pedestrianisation.
