Saskatoon workshops to introduce tips for fruit growing success

Summers in Saskatoon may be relatively short, but an upcoming event will explain that this does not mean fruit cannot be grown in the area.

The College of Agriculture and Bioresources at the University of Saskatchewan has made arrangements to offer two online classes that will introduce fruit growing techniques to the local home gardening community. Each workshop will introduce different topics, and a variety of species will be covered.

The first session will see the learners discover which species tend to do the best in the area, and pruning, cultural care, soil preparation and pollination will all be discussed. During the second instalment, the group will learn about some of the newest cultivars in the nursery trade, such as sour cherries, currants, raspberries, strawberries and hazelnuts. Sea buckthorn will also be included should time permit. The classes will both be livestreamed, with tickets on offer for $20 each.

Even though a workshop like this is offered virtually, its attendees may still appreciate a hard copy version of the materials used. These can be produced by area Print shops, which will also be able to produce promotional Pens and other items to distribute alongside the learning materials.

The Growing Fruit in Northern Gardens sessions will be held on May 11th and 13th. Joining instructions will be supplied to each registrant one hour ahead of time.
