Saskatoon Makerspace sets date for blacksmithing session

Blacksmithing techniques were once used to produce everything from horseshoes to hinges, and an event planned for Saskatoon Makerspace will introduce these to the public.

The hands on Blacksmithing 101 workshop will cover several metalworking techniques, and both demonstrations and hand on practice will be included. Tickets are $185.91, and all of the tools and materials needed will be supplied.

The participant in the session will be working with a forge as well as an anvil, and they will have the chance to try using an assortment of hammers to shape hot metal. Bending, tapering, punching and twisting will all be on the agenda, and best practices, including safety protocols will be discussed. Everyone will walk away with an item they have crafted, and the activity is intended for those who have never tried blacksmithing before. Long sleeved shirts and pants are required, and they should be made from denim, cotton wool or another natural fibre.

A class or workshop can provide a way for the public to try their hand at an activity to see if it is a good fit for them. Safety waivers, handouts and other materials can be prepared by Stationery printers.

This hands-on introduction to the art and science of blacksmithing will begin at 10:00 am on January 18th. It will continue on until 2:00 pm, and Makerspace is located at 209 Avenue D.
