The Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF) announced on February 8 that it will invest $21.4m in barley and wheat breeding at Agriculture and Agri-food Canada (AAFC) centres in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta over the next five years.
Without investments and industry funding into research, Canadian grain producers would not be the world leaders they are today. Partnerships with and investments from Minister MacAulay and the Ministry of Agriculture, as well as the provincial Prairie governments, are also vital to Canada’s agricultural success.
To date, the investments made into barley and wheat breeding through check-offs by grain producers in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta has been instrumental in providing not only Canadians, but people across the world, with some of the most popular varieties of grain available today.
These investments fund important research into best practices and new breeding techniques to create new and more resilient crop varieties. When conducting research, meticulous records are kept and data is analyzed and turned into a report, often presented with aids such as Posters or documents with professional binding.
Such investments also benefit the producers because they reap the benefits of the results of the research, acting as the frontline that puts the research into practice.
The WGRF is a Saskatoon-based organization that has been investing in barley and wheat breeding research since 1994.
