Saskatoon asked to be part of global bird count

Whether they have been enjoying the hobby for many years or are just starting out, an upcoming activity will give Saskatoon birders a way to get involved in some environmental stewardship.

The Saskatoon Boxing Day Bird Count is right around the corner, and registration for the event is now open. Anyone can participate, with the only requirement being that they can identify the feathered friends they spot.

The count is part of a global movement to count and monitor the number of birds in a given area. The data collected locally and around the world will be used by scientists, and once the results have been collated, they will be made available to the public in Nature Saskatchewan’s Blue Jay magazine. Instructions for how to count and record which species are seen will be made available to each registrant once they have signed up.

An activity like this can be a lot of fun for the whole family, and with some luck, they may be able to spot some rare birds, along with more common species. Stationery printers can prepare record sheets and other materials for this sort of occasion, and these can be paired with promotional Pens to send out to each household that plans on getting involved.

The Saskatoon Boxing Day Bird Count will be held on December 26th. More information is available on the function’s online listing.
